Adorning several hats as a sociologist, political analyst, and astute observer of social dynamics in Mauritius, Malenn Oodiah is the creative mind and driving force behind Lakaz Flanbwayan, a cultural and artistic hub he founded in December 2020.

Located in Bambous and aptly named after the magnificent flame trees sprinkled in the area, Lakaz Flanbwayan is the embodiment of a spirit of community and togetherness. The Medine Group, in line with their social and civic initiative named Projet de Société, generously provided the space for this transformative project.

What started with photography workshops for local youth quickly gained momentum thanks to the overwhelming enthusiasm of participants. Inspired by their response, Malenn Oodiah dreamed bigger and expanded the vision for Lakaz Flanbwayan, transforming it into a vibrant meeting ground where art and culture unite folks from all walks of life.

Since its inception, the center has evolved into a dynamic stage for artists, hosting a variety of workshops in music, painting, and sculpture, and organised debates and exhibitions, boasting an impressive fifty showcases so far!

For Malenn Oodiah, these initiatives go beyond just artistic endeavours; they are a way to strengthen the local fabric of Mauritius. To him, art remains a powerful tool for fostering harmony in Mauritius’ diverse society. And as far as his dream is concerned? It’s to see Lakaz Flanbwayan shine brightly (or as he likes to say, “blaze like the flame tree”) as a symbol of a more inclusive Mauritian society.
