On the 14th of March 2024, SPARC – The West’s premiere sports facility – played host to a major event in celebration of the upcoming Paris Olympic Games: the third edition of the Terre de Jeux 2024 relay. A day dedicated to going the extra mile!

The West rocks to the rhythm of sports

The Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games (which will run from the 24th of July to the 11th of August 2024) are drawing nearer, and the excitement is building. What better way to celebrate the Olympic spirit than with an initiative that highlights sport and the universal values it promotes? In the run-up to this much anticipated international event, the Terre de Jeux relay – a 24-hour race in stages around the globe – was held on March the 14th.

SPARC, The West's flagship sports complex, provided the starting point for the two events arranged for the occasion: a children's race of 1.3km within the complex, which mainly involved local schoolchildren; and an adult race over 6.46km, through Magenta’s superb landscapes. Several hundred participants happily joined forces to fly the Games’ colours high!

As these two races drew to a close, the relay baton was passed on to French embassies in the next time zone via social networks, traversing continents in a clockwise direction. A sporting experience for today’s world!

A day in the spirit of the Olympic Games

An initiative of the French embassy in Mauritius, the Terre de Jeux relay provided an opportunity for people from all walks of life to come together: for one morning, schoolchildren and students of all ages, community members, Medine group employees and other sports enthusiasts (both amateur and professional) had the chance to share the competitive spirit in a friendly and festive atmosphere.

Holding the event at SPARC also recognised the commitment of The West’s renowned sports complex to promoting excellence and inclusion. In fact, SPARC already supports disabled athletes as they prepare for regional and international competitions, including the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

Eleven Mauritian athletes benefitted from free access to SPARC's facilities for their training in 2023. These athletes include Noémie Alphonse, Anaïs Angéline, Roberto Michel and Yovanni Philippe, all qualified for the Paralympic Games. This success further reinforces SPARC's commitment to equality of opportunity and the principle of sport for everyone!

More than just a simple sporting event, the Terre de Jeux relay at SPARC is a symbol of sport's ability to unite people around shared values such as personal endeavour, challenging one’s own limits, and inclusion, in anticipation of the big event this summer: Paris 2024!
