On the 27th of April 2024, The West came alive to the rhythm of an unforgettable sporting experience: the Medine Trail. Organised by the Medine Group with Rando-Trail et Nature and held in the Yemen nature reserve, this annual event gave lovers of sport and the natural world a memorable day out.
Wending through the heart of the Yemen nature reserve in western Mauritius, the Medine Trail is a sporting adventure that makes a lasting impression on those who have the pleasure of taking part!
After the huge success of the first edition in 2023, the race now aims to become THE don’t-miss annual event for those who love sport and the great outdoors in the heart of the West.
The second edition proved to be a day full of discoveries, encounters and strong feelings for seasoned runners and enthusiastic family groups alike. What other event offers the chance to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the region at the same time as taking on a sporting challenge!
Discovering Yemen's natural heritage
Found between Cascavelle and Black River, the Yemen Nature Reserve provides an exciting playground for the Medine Trail.
Surrounded by the West’s majestic mountains, including the Rempart, the Trois Mamelles and the Tourelle de Tamarin, the Yemen Reserve forms a spectacular backdrop for the competition’s various routes.
From winding paths through dense forests to wide plains that evoke the African savannah, every kilometre of this year’s event offered participants a new insight into the diverse landscapes that form this pristine corner of the island.
To complete this picture of perfection, the race has been meticulously designed to minimise its environmental impact, with a ban on the use of plastic a particularly notable initiative.
Courses for all levels
After months of anticipation, over a thousand participants came together on the 27th of April 2024 for a day dedicated to challenging one’s physical limitations, while surrounded by nature.
The promise of an exciting adventure attracted runners of all levels – from experienced trail runners to novices, as well as children –, all keen to push their own limits as they explored the reserve's trails!
Three different courses were carefully curated for this year's event: a 5km Fun Run offering young runners aged 7 and above a friendly and enjoyable race; the Short Trail (13km), leading participants through a demanding course across plains and mountain ridges, with short but intense climbs; and finally, the Long Trail (28km) offered experienced runners a real challenge, with a positive vertical drop of 800 metres.
See you next year!
The Medine Trail aims to promote a healthy, active lifestyle, with routes to suit everyone, a convivial atmosphere and the breathtaking scenery of the Yemen Nature Reserve showcasing the richness of The West's natural spaces.
Whether this year's runners were at the head of the pack as they crossed the finish line, or simply admired the beauty of the scenery as they ran, the Medine Trail experience will undoubtedly remain engraved on their memories. Some will certainly already be looking toward the next edition...
